Theatre Lawrence is currently accepting applications for select creative positions in the 2026-2027 season. To apply please send an email to julmer@theatrelawrence.com stating what show and position you are interested in being considered for, along with a resume. For consideration please apply by May 8.

Spring is in the air, things are greening up, and there is a sense of growth and renewal. It’s appropriate that this is also the time of year when we unveil the shows for our upcoming 2026–2027 50th Anniversary Season !

We’ll be bringing you a tremendous lineup of six musicals and plays. With our 50th season in mind, we have brought together nostalgic classics alongside new and thought-provoking shows. In addition to the regular season, we are pleased to continue some new traditions, including producing an edgy show in the fall and bringing back the Musical in Concert concept after a year’s absence.

Crafting a well-rounded season that speaks to the variety of voices in our community is one of the most challenging things we do each year. The process takes months, and sometimes, when we think we’ve found the perfect show or shows, the curtain quickly falls when we discover the rights aren’t available due to a national tour or a nearby professional production. Occasionally we have to wait to announce a show for the same reasons - I’m looking over the rainbow at you, December family musical.

I sometimes describe season selection as being like giving birth to a child. It’s exciting and new, but also scary because you want it to be perfect, and you don’t want to mess it up.

We hope you will join us on this exciting journey throughout our upcoming 50th season.

Dial M for Murder - new twist on classic thriller

Our journey through the 2025–2026 season continues with a fresh take on a classic mystery thriller in Dial M for Murder. Considered a landmark example of its genre, this new version of the script proves just how engaging this kind of mystery can be.

Originally written by Frederick Knott for a BBC broadcast in 1952, the play soon moved to the stage, first in London and then on Broadway. The 1954 Alfred Hitchcock film adaptation starred Grace Kelly, along with John Williams and Anthony Dawson, who reprised their roles from the stage version, and helped vault the story into enduring public awareness.

The show is considered a perfect example of what’s known as an “inverted mystery.” There is no mystery: we know exactly who did it, and how. Instead, the fun and thrill of the show come from seeing whether and how the guilty party is caught. It’s the classic “Columbo” effect. In fact, the bumbling detective character with “just one more thing” to ask was inspired in large part by this play.

This 2020 adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher, while keeping the setting and story the same, adds new urgency and twists. Hatcher said he was initially hesitant to tamper with what he described as a “perfect play.” “To fiddle with such jewel-like precision is to court disaster,” he said. But he found a way in, giving Margot more agency and changing the nature of the relationship between her and her lover. This version also, in my opinion, does a nice job of trimming the original three-act play into a lean, tight two-act adaptation for contemporary audiences.

Follow us on this journey through the twists and turns of this clockwork thriller, and discover why Dial M for Murder and the stories it inspired continue to enthrall us to this day.

Theatre Lawrence is seeking a dynamic, relationship-driven Development Director to help advance our mission through fundraising, donor engagement, sponsorships, grants, and special events.

As a key member of the leadership team, the Development Director will lead contributed revenue efforts, build and steward relationships with donors and community partners, and help strengthen Theatre Lawrence’s long-term financial sustainability.

The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator, an effective relationship-builder, and someone who is passionate about the arts and the impact of community theatre.

Qualifications

Candidates should have professional experience in fundraising, development, donor relations, communications, arts administration, or a related field. Experience with sponsorships, grants, event-based fundraising, and donor stewardship is strongly preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $60,000–$70,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include health care, PTO and holidays, professional development opportunities, a theatre ticket stipend, and a flexible work schedule.

Fresh take on a classic style

We are at the mid-season stop on our season journey, and we’re heading to the charming English countryside for a relaxing comic romp. Stylistically, The Cottage could have come from the likes of Noël Coward or George S. Kaufman. In the hands of modern playwright Sandy Rustin, the play has a fresh, contemporary feel.

First, let’s take a look at the signature elements of a Coward-esque comedy. The dialogue is fast, witty, and precise. Think of conversations as quick volleys, punctuated by a sharp button or punchline, as characters score points in their battle of wits.

The characters are sophisticated and smart - or at least they think they are. This style also employs classic character types: the dashing, sharp lead; the foil; the loyal friend; the unexpected visitor; and so forth. These familiar roles give the audience a quick setup for the formula, so the action (and jokes) can kick off in earnest. And of course, in classic comedy-of-manners tradition, it’s the upper crust being gently (and sometimes not-so-gently) mocked for jealousy, vanity, and pride.

We can’t forget the setting - which, by the way, kudos to our wonderful scenic design and set dressing. The set provides a stylish, glamorous playground for the characters to make frantic entrances and exits, miss seeing each other by seconds, and, of course, slam a few doors. Physicality builds and combines with the sharp, fast-paced dialogue as the circumstances become more and more outrageous.

The plot nearly always revolves around some sort of romantic entanglement. In a Coward comedy, the couples aren’t cozy - they’re combustible. Things are cute and playful until something tips the balance, and then it becomes a battle.

Now here’s where Rustin puts her contemporary lens on the formula. Instead of the plot being primarily driven by the choices of witty, sophisticated, charming men, it’s the choices of the women that drive, and ultimately decide, the story. It’s that small refocus that takes a style of comedy that can sometimes skew problematic and lets us appreciate the considerable skill and craft it takes to bring it to life in a way that looks both stylish and effortless.

Right now, we all need to take a moment and enjoy some laughs.

Making the most of March

It’s going to be an amazing month at Theatre Lawrence.

I know, I know, of course I say that. It’s kind of my job to say things like that. But just take a second and look at everything happening this month:

The Cottage will make you laugh until you shoot tea out your nose. (Well… maybe. No promises.)
Dial M for Murde r will be in rehearsal, bringing a classic thriller to the stage.
The Vintage Players are sharing a brand-new show with us.
Youngsters are rehearsing The Lion King Kids .
We wrap up the month with auditions for The Addams Family .
And then there are the classes!

The adult tap class sold out more than a week before it started
We’re offering an adult acting class

I’m exhausted just typing all that.

This kind of month is made possible by a combination of forces coming together. It’s people: volunteers, our board of directors, and staff. It’s audiences, without them, it might as well be just a rehearsal. And it’s donors and sponsors, who provide the financial backbone of our programming.

Later this month, we’ll be kicking off our annual membership campaign. Contributions of all sizes make a difference, from $50 to $5,000. Your support helps us make months like this, and 11 others just like them, possible.

Now I’m going to start another pot of coffee, because we’re going to need it!

The National Civil Rights Museum is a complex of museums and historic buildings in Memphis, Tennessee; its exhibits trace the history of the civil rights movement in the United States from the 17th century to the present. The museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel, the site of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. Two other buildings and their adjacent property, also connected with the King assassination, have been acquired as part of the museum complex.

Memphis Trip Series: Lorraine Motel

MEMPHIS TRIP SERIES: LORRAINE HOTEL

The National Civil Rights Museum is a complex of museums and historic buildings built around the former Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2016, the museum was honored by becoming an affiliate museum of the Smithsonian Institution.

Civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. stayed in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in early April 1968, while working to organize protests around the ongoing Memphis sanitation strike. While standing on the balcony outside his room on the evening of April 4, King was suddenly shot once through the neck by an unseen assassin's sniper's bullet. King fell to the ground, bleeding from his head and neck. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, but the wound was fatal. He died at the hospital an hour after the shooting.

The Mountaintop a relevant reminder to raise our voice

As we begin 2026, the power of The Mountaintop feels particularly important and relevant. Our cast and crew have felt the sobering truth of that relevance as they have explored this powerful script. We are grateful that you have chosen to be part of that journey and hope you will find inspiration in the experience.

Early in the production process, the cast and members of the production team traveled to Memphis. Our director, Darren Canady, says the company’s understanding of the show underwent a profound shift during the trip.

Among the sites they visited was the National Civil Rights Museum, which includes the Lorraine Motel. There, they were able to see Dr. King’s room. As Darren reflected following the visit, “It’s hard not to feel the energies of what had occurred there.”

The trip also revealed other sobering realities of the civil rights movement, including the murder of Larry Payne, a 16-year-old killed by police during the sanitation workers’ strike just days before Dr. King was assassinated. The group attempted to visit his grave but were unable to find it in what they described as a poorly maintained cemetery. It felt like a painfully symbolic reminder of a forgotten voice, one of many everyday voices silenced for standing up for what was right.

One of the most powerful, and controversial, aspects of the play is its deeply human portrayal of Dr. King. He is not placed on a pedestal. He is shown as a man with holes in his socks, capable of making imperfect decisions. Some have criticized the script for this approach.

Playwright Katori Hall, however, pushes back, saying: “A warts-and-all portrayal of Dr. King is important because there’s this extraordinary human being who is actually quite ordinary. I feel as though by portraying him with his flaws and foibles, we, too, can see—as human beings who have these flaws—that we, too, can be Kings; we, too, can carry on that baton that he has passed down to us.”

Anyone’s voice can be raised. Some may speak with greater elegance, and some may be forgotten over time—but the truth and the demand for justice carried in those voices will endure.

Memphis Trip Series: Clayborn Temple

MEMPHIS TRIP SERIES: CLAYBORN TEMPLE

Clayborn Temple, formerly Second Presbyterian Church, was a historic place in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 for local architectural significance. It was upgraded to national significance under Clayborn Temple in 2017 due to its role in the events of the Sanitation Workers' Strike of 1968. On April 28, 2025, the church was destroyed in a fire, assumed to be intentionally set.

Reflections from the cast:

“The importance of Clayborn Temple to the Civil Rights movement in Memphis is undeniable. It was a cornerstone of community, culture, and religion. We were the only people at the temple when we arrived. A holy place, filled with such meaning, the souls, ghosts and stories of those who fought the good fight destroyed, burned down and seemingly forgotten. I can only hope that it can be restored to its former glory to honor the memory of everyone who called this place home and a safe place.”

“Clayborn Temple is historical, yet spiritually awakening. The experience embodies what it means to be on hollow ground. My immediate intrinsic thought was sadness — a cry for what was lost. Ironically, the resonance of the past seemed to be even louder, especially given the timbre of the country present. On our return to Clayborn Temple for a second time, and after our visit to the gravesite of Larry Payne, the sixteen-year-old boy whose life was lost at the hands of the police on the very site of the temple, I felt an eerie shift and a deep sense of loss — loss for Larry Payne, loss for Dr. King in his attempt to see the strike to success, and a loss for humanity’s fight for equality and peace.”

Road trip to Memphis

Early in the production process for "The Mountaintop", the cast, director, and stage manager took a road trip to Memphis to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Martin Luther King Jr., and the climate and time period in which MLK Jr. was assassinated.

Follow along over the next few weeks as we share snippets from their trip about what they learned and the feelings they experienced during their time in Memphis. This first installment gives an overview of the team's experience.

Proceeds from Pure Imagination will directly support our Youth Troupe program , helping us purchase much-needed set pieces and equipment that allow these young artists to continue creating, learning, and shining on stage.

2026 Penguin Project Information Meeting

Everyone is invited to come learn about our program

Once a year, a magical and deeply moving celebration of the human spirit unfolds in theaters across the country. Children in a program called The Penguin Project take the stage to perform a modified version of a beloved Broadway musical.

What makes these productions truly extraordinary is that every role is performed by young artists with developmental disabilities, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual and learning disabilities, visual or hearing impairments, and other neurological conditions.

Each artist is paired with a dedicated peer mentor—a child of the same age without disabilities who volunteers to work alongside them throughout four months of rehearsals and all the way to the final curtain call. Together, they learn, grow, and shine.

By providing meaningful access to community theater, The Penguin Project proves that the challenges of a disability should never limit a child’s ability to participate fully in life’s most joyful and enriching experiences.

The Theatre Lawrence offices will be closed beginning Wednesday, Dec. 24 for our annual holiday break. We will be officially back in the office on Monday, Jan. 5. Our staff and volunteers are prioritizing spending time with friends and family, along with self care during this time.

While the office will not be open until Jan. 5, the SOTI scheduled for Jan. 2 will take place, and rehearsals for "The Mountaintop" will continue during this time. Tickets and gift certificates are available from our online box office 24/7.

2025 was a year filled with amazing achievements, but also some tragic losses. We truly appreciate the support of the hundreds of volunteers who help bring the theatre to life. We also value the thousands of patrons who fill our seats, the generous donors who contribute to our operations, and the community-minded businesses who sponsor our programs.

Thank you everyone for supporting us in 2025. We look forward to the future in 2026!

Best gifts go both ways

The best gifts involve both giving and receiving. The last several weeks at Theatre Lawrence prove that point.

Actors, musicians, stage crews, front-of-house volunteers, and more have given their valuable time this month to deliver performances of the crowd-pleasing, nostalgia-filled musical White Christmas . For those involved in the show, this often means missing holiday parties of their own, waiting until the last minute to do their shopping, and enduring long days and late nights.

They have been rewarded by Lawrence and the surrounding area with the gift of a run that will have played to 99% capacity over three weeks. For volunteer performers who share their talents with the community simply because they love it, such an enthusiastic response from audiences is the most meaningful reward. The fact that not just friends and family, but the entire community, chose to make time in their busy holiday schedules to support them and Theatre Lawrence means so much to so many.

This is just one of the many ways we share the gift and impact of the arts back and forth with you, our community. From youth classes at the theatre, to visiting classrooms with Suitcase Stories, to performing at area retirement homes with the re-energized Vintage Players, Theatre Lawrence continues to deliver bright paper packages tied up with strings of favorite things. In return, the community gives us its own gifts by auditioning, volunteering behind the scenes, buying tickets, enrolling in classes, and making donations.

When a community and its theatre make each other better, that is one of the true gifts of a thriving arts organization.

Our holiday productions have become nearly as much of a tradition as the holidays themselves. It’s heartwarming to see entire generations of families arrive each year to experience our December show. The awe on the faces of children walking through the theatre doors for the first time, often with grandparents in tow, is sometimes a performance all its own. We’re also delighted each year to welcome businesses and groups who make attending this show part of their customer or employee appreciation programs.

With so few true shared spaces in our world today, theatre, and community theatre in particular, provides a unique “third space” where people from all walks of life can gather for a shared experience. That’s why the production in this slot isn’t always strictly “holiday-themed,” but is instead chosen for its ability to bring the entire family and community together.

This year, though, we are presenting one of the most beloved holiday shows of all time. Bing Crosby’s version of the title song remains the best-selling single in history. You may know that the song wasn’t originally written for the 1954 film “ White Christmas ,” but for the 1942 movie “ Holiday Inn ,” where it won the Academy Award. This song that is synonymous with the holiday season was written on a sunny California day by Irving Berlin, who could not read music, barely play the piano, and was Jewish.

The stage adaptation, developed in 2004, made a number of changes common to screen-to-stage transitions: character adjustments, refined plot points, and the addition of more classic Irving Berlin songs. What remained unchanged is the nostalgia and warm glow the story brings to audiences of all ages.

May your days be merry and bright. And may all your Christmases (or whatever holidays you celebrate this time of year) be white.

More than counting lines

Let’s change the messaging we are giving to our young actors! Somewhere along the line, we have taught our youth that having lots and lots of lines is the ultimate sign of importance when participating in a theatrical production. This just isn’t so, and I would love to change that vision of participating in theatre for them.

When I was growing up, my favorite director would always remind us of Constantine Stanislavsky’s adage, “There are no small parts, only small actors.” Like everyone else I would roll my eyes and wonder who is getting the lead. What I didn’t understand at the time was that no matter how many lines you have to deliver, an actor on stage is always acting and sometimes more importantly reacting to the action of the scene.

Over the twenty years as a theatre educator, I have seen a lot of students who think that their time to act is only when they have a line. They don’t see the time they are standing on stage listen to others as acting moments. I have even had a kid stand when he recited a line then immediately sit on the floor and play with his shoes after the line was over. He viewed the time on stage when he wasn’t speaking “a break.”

Helping young actors to understand that acting is equal parts speaking and reacting, should be a goal of youth theatre. Many times, the smaller characters are the ones who help the audience to understand what is going on in the show. The way they react to what other characters say or do, gives the audience information about the action of the scene.

For example, in the climactic scene in Beauty and the Beast when Gaston is trying to rally the villagers to go after the Beast, and he says, “The Beast will make off with your children. He’ll come after them in the night! Forget the old man! I say… we kill the Beast.”

How the villagers react in that moment can make or break that scene. As a director, I want those villagers to hear what Gaston is saying and be moved to join his attack. It would change the scene greatly if all the villagers who don’t have lines then, simply stood on the stage with little to no emotion or energy. The audience needs the villagers to start getting exciting, full of energy, and physically showing Gaston that they are with him. Gaston will not be as effective storming the Beast’s castle if the villagers are simply passing time on the stage until they have a line.

As a youth educator, this year I am going to focus on helping young actors to shift their focus from number of lines to making the most of their time on stage, and acknowledging how much acting can be done on stage even when silent. TL family mourns the loss of Louise ImMasche

The Theatre Lawrence family is deeply saddened by the loss of our friend Louise ImMasche , who was killed in a car accident on Friday, October 24, following a performance of The Rocky Horror Show .

Louise was an immensely talented performer who lit up every room and filled the stage with remarkable energy and charisma. They were kind, generous, and caring - making anyone they shared the stage with feel welcomed and accepted for who they are.

Louise appeared in many Theatre Lawrence productions, including Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors , Adam/Felicia in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , Max in Lend Me a Tenor , and Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid . In addition to performing on stage, they appeared in several fundraisers and volunteered at the theatre, including ushering. Louise was particularly proud to have played Hedwig in last year’s production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch , and was currently appearing for the fifth time as Dr. Frank N. Furter in The Rocky Horror Show .

We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from individuals and organizations across the country. It is often said that theatre is a family, and we have truly felt the embrace of our extended theatre family during this difficult time. Thank you.

A celebration of Louise’s life will be held at the theatre on Friday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. "All in attendance are invited to wear something colorful and sparkly." Complete obituary here .

2025 Benefit Concert a Huge Success!

What a night! Theatre Lawrence was rocking a nearly sold out house on October 10 as the Beatles tribute band Yesterday & Today brought down the house at our 2025 Benefit Concert. From the great music, to a surprise wedding proposal, the energy in the room was electric!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our audience, sponsors, and donors, the evening raised approximately $61,000 in net proceeds, with more than $31,000 contributed through the Raise the Paddle for The Penguin Project —our program empowering young artists with special needs to shine on stage.

Guests enjoyed great music, delicious food and drinks, and a joyful celebration of community and the arts.

We’re grateful to everyone who made it possible—our volunteers, sponsors, and the amazing crowd who filled the theatre with joy and Beatles love!

Just a typical Tuesday at Theatre Lawrence

Walking through the halls of Theatre Lawrence this time of year, you’re treated to a remarkable variety of programs in action.

Last week, our biennial production of “The Rocky Horror Show” was rocking out on stage, getting ready for tech week. Meanwhile, downstairs, auditions for “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” were already bringing a hint of the holiday season.

Earlier that same day, our young performers were singing and dancing as they prepared for their fall production next month. The Vintage Players, not to be outdone, took their show on the road for a performance at a local retirement community. And let’s not forget Suitcase Stories—our outreach program visiting area classrooms to collaborate with students on original short plays inspired by their ideas.

Just a normal Tuesday at Theatre Lawrence. Well… maybe not a normal Tuesday—but not an unusual one either.

Sometimes, when we’re in the midst of back-to-back committee meetings, reviewing financial summaries, or troubleshooting the latest HVAC issue, it’s easy to forget the incredible number of ways we’re impacting people’s lives.

Whether in a classroom, a rehearsal, or a performance, Theatre Lawrence is proud to connect with so many parts of our community. And somewhere between the competing melodies of “Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me” and “Happy Holidays,” it’s good to pause, take a breath, and remember why we’re so busy.

TL board holds 2025 planning retreat

The TL Board of Directors, along with some members of the staff, spent a recent Saturday engaging in a productive annual planning and strategy session.

The board holds these annual planning sessions outside of regular monthly meetings to freely discuss topics and ideas. The day also allows the board to deep dive into major topics and learn more about being effective stewards of the organization, as well as getting to know each other better.

In addition to evaluating recent strategies and last season’s goals, the session focused on envisioning future impact of TL and what steps will be needed to achieve those goals.

We truly appreciate the dedication and expertise of our board members as we move the theatre into the future. Thanks also to Brandon Woods at Alvamar for providing a space away from our regular conference room to refresh our brains.

Welcome to the 2025–2026 Theatre Lawrence Season!

This year promises a wide variety of theatrical destinations designed to entertain, expand, and enliven audiences and participants alike.

We begin our journey with the Pulitzer Prize–winning musical Next to Normal . This groundbreaking work opened on Broadway in 2009, after first appearing as a 10-minute workshop in 1998.

An unconventional topic for a musical, the show centers on a family navigating grief and mental health. In her book Feeling Pain is Normal, Rebecca Cecilia Kidwell writes, “Next to Normal provides a safe community for grief. Many of the audience members have experienced loss, and many of them will cry and hug each other—even if they are strangers—because they finally feel that someone is permitting them to be open with their emotions.”

Paired with a contemporary rock score, the show asks honest, sometimes uncomfortable, questions. In rehearsals, we’ve reflected on how the themes and emotions explored by the characters are universal, reaching beyond the specific circumstances of the script. The excitement in our acting community has been remarkable: over 70 performers auditioned for this six-person cast. Casting was both a challenge and a gift, resulting in a group of performers who are giving their all every night as we explore this complex, rewarding material together.

All of this makes me truly excited to share Next to Normal with you. Theatre offers the unique opportunity to share an experience—even when it is challenging. We thank you for joining us on this journey and encourage you to talk with one another, share your feelings, and seek support if this story resonates deeply with you.

Last week we celebrated nearly 400 rock stars who played leading roles in the success of Theatre Lawrence’s 2024–2025 season.

Our theme last season was extraordinary theatre created by extraordinary people . And extraordinary they were—these individuals donated more than 30,530 hours across every corner of the organization. From building sets and sewing costumes, to running lights and sound, shifting scenery like backstage ninjas, ushering, serving at the bar, performing with the Vintage Players, supporting special events, and bringing shows to life—our volunteers made it all possible.

Looking back at the calendar, there were only 10 days all year without a class, rehearsal, performance, or public event happening at Theatre Lawrence (and that includes holidays!).

A special shout-out to the winners of our Charley Awards , given to volunteers who contributed 350 hours or more last season (full list of winners below). An extra round of applause for Rob Claassen, our Volunteer of the Year—for the second year in a row!

Seeking Lawrence-area classrooms for Suitcase Stories program

Suitcase Stories is an exciting new initiative from Theatre Lawrence designed to ignite imagination, inspire creativity, and empower upper elementary students through storytelling and performance. Led by Education Director Emily Giles, along with a team of local playwrights, actors, and educators, this project brings the magic of theatre directly into classrooms.

The Suitcase Stories crew will partner with five classrooms in the Lawrence area, focusing on schools and students who may not typically engage with Theatre Lawrence programs. Over the course of four hour-long sessions, students will explore storytelling, creative writing, and self-expression. The first three sessions guide students through the process of creating original stories, while the final session culminates in a live performance of the students’ work by the Suitcase Stories troupe.

By blending education and the arts, Suitcase Stories offers a powerful platform for young voices to be heard and celebrated. Did we mention this program is offered for FREE to each classroom.

It's about the connections

I recently spent a week attending the American Association of Community Theatre’s biennial national festival. The main focus of the festival is performances by 12 shows selected through a series of state and regional festivals held around the country. But there’s much more to gatherings like this than just seeing shows. With workshops and exhibits, there’s always something new to learn—or something important to be reminded of. And of course, there are meetings—lots of meetings. I just wrapped up serving eight years on the organization’s board of directors.

Most importantly, though, are the connections. In fact, that was one of the themes of the festival: “Theatre connects us all.” The hundreds of people in attendance represented the full range of community theatres, from small, all-volunteer organizations to multi-million-dollar institutions. Everyone shared the same connection—a passion for telling stories that strengthen our communities. Regardless of size or scope, we all face many of the same basic challenges. Whether in a formal workshop or a spontaneous conversation in the lobby, we came together to share, learn, and help each other thrive.

You don’t have to attend a national festival to find that connection. You’ll feel it in the audience at events like our upcoming Penguin Project production of The Little Mermaid JR. , or with our Vintage Players and their reimagined annual showcase. We invite you to explore how you can become more involved at TL—perhaps by attending one of our upcoming volunteer open houses (details coming soon). It’s truly amazing what happens when we gather as a community to watch, play, and grow together.

Theatre truly connects us all—and helps us all thrive—something we can all agree we need now more than ever.

Escape to those summer vibes

What better way to kick off those laid-back summer vibes than with our season-closing musical, Escape to Margaritaville ?

The music of Jimmy Buffett invites us to relax and enjoy ourselves—and let’s be honest, we could all use a little “License to Chill.” But what is it about Buffett and his music that inspired devoted fans, restaurants, resorts, and of course, a Broadway musical?

Now, I’m no Parrothead, but it doesn’t take much to see the appeal.

Buffett’s music blends multiple genres and sounds—country, rock, and Caribbean influences—that celebrate escapism, a relaxed attitude, and that unmistakable “beach life” feeling. His songs are relatable. We all want to find joy, freedom, and sometimes a little redemption, preferably with a dash of humor. It all adds up to a timeless appeal. Buffett’s music is custom-made for summer BBQs, sipping drinks poolside, or just taking a mental vacation in the middle of a hectic workday.

That music, of course, led to an entire culture around being a Parrothead - Hawaiian shirts, margaritas, and chill vibes became the trademarks of devoted fans who try not to take life too seriously.

And then there’s the business empire, which may contribute most to the enduring celebration of the “Buffett lifestyle,” even after his passing. He turned his persona into a brand—complete with restaurants, resorts (including one opening just down the road in a few weeks), and more.

So now, it’s time to sit back, grab a drink, and enjoy your official start to summer.

How are things at the theatre?

That’s the standard way I’m greeted when out and about. I certainly don’t mind, and it’s more interesting than the non-interest greeting of “how are you?” The theatre is a much more interesting topic of conversation than I am. At the same time, I know people don’t have time for a complete answer of how things are going at Theatre Lawrence.

In short, good – busy as always. The slightly longer answer is – very busy but we’re keeping all the plates spinning and proud of what we’re achieving.

Somehow, we are just a few weeks away from wrapping up the regular season with “Escape to Margaritaville.” Things are gearing up for all our summer youth programs including starting rehearsals for “The Lightning Thief” and the Penguins are hard at work on “Little Mermaid, Jr”. The new season will be here before we know it. Early bird season tickets for the 2025-2026 season are available now, and we’re in the midst of all the planning and staffing up for those shows.

It’s also a time of challenges. We are planning our way forward following the loss of our friend and colleague Mary Ann Saunders. Like many individuals and organizations, we are keeping an eye on the latest developments from the Federal government and how it may impact us and our community going forward.

Overall, though, things at the theatre are going well, with solid attendance, and excitement about future projects.

Let's solve a murder - fun for the whole family

Nothing says "fun family night" like solving a murder.

Judging by the enduring popularity of the board game Clue, one could surmise that’s exactly the case. The 1985 movie, while not a hit at the time, has since become a cult classic. This stage adaptation has proven to be a success for theatres across the country. So, we must deduce that solving a murder is fun.

The evidence backs this up. The board game, conceived in the UK in 1943, was originally called Cluedo—a play on words combining “clue” and the Latin word ludo, meaning “I play.” Due to wartime shortages, the game wasn’t produced commercially until 1949. When released in the U.S., the Latin wordplay was dropped, and it became simply Clue, distributed by Parker Brothers. The game continues to be produced and updated, but the basic premise has remained the same.

The 1985 film featured an all-star cast of comedic actors, including Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, and Christopher Lloyd. It famously had three different endings, and which one you saw depended on the theater you attended. Though it wasn’t a financial success at the time, it has since developed a major cult following.

In 2017, the first version of this stage play debuted, drawing heavily from the 1985 film. The script has undergone several revisions and adaptations through 2021. The show has proven wildly popular, often landing on lists of the most-produced plays in community, professional, and academic theatres.

It’s also popular with actors—our auditions saw the largest turnout for a play in many years!

So what makes it so beloved? It’s a combination of many factors: the familiar title and premise, the classic over-the-top characters, and the chance to don our detective hats and solve a mystery. It creates a kind of “comfort food” feel. We know what to expect, we can relax and enjoy the ride, and maybe even pat ourselves on the back when we think we've solved the mystery before the characters do.

Sometimes, you just need to take a break and enjoy some good, old-fashioned fun—solving a murder.

Spring into theatre fun!

Spring is always an exciting time. We get more hours of sunlight, the landscape transforms from brown and gray to vibrant shades of green, and everyone just seems a little bit happier. It’s also an exciting time at Theatre Lawrence!

This week, we officially announced our 2025–2026 regular season—a fantastic mix of beloved classics and fresh contemporary hits. Get ready for plenty of laughs, catchy music, and stories that entertain while also offering something to reflect on. Early bird season tickets and renewals will be available very soon!

But let’s not forget everything happening in our current season. Audiences are loving the fast-paced comedy of Clue—so much so that we’ve already added another performance! And coming up, Escape to Margaritaville will soon begin rehearsals. It’s the perfect way to kick off a fun, laid-back summer. (Spoiler alert: there’s a new machine in the bar—can you guess what one of the specialty drinks will be?)

Speaking of summer, it’s not too early to plan for the kids. Our summer classes are enrolling now, and several are already more than halfway full!

So get outside, soak up that sunshine, and be sure to enjoy everything Theatre Lawrence is bringing to life this spring.

Lawrence St Patrick's Day parade committee awards TL $20,000

Theatre Lawrence thanks Lawrence St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee for awarding us $20,000 as a beneficiary of this year's "parade season."

This funding will be used to support youth education programming at the theatre, including continuing our suitcase story program, youth productions, scholarship opportunities, and the Penguin Project. Throughout the early part of the year there were many fundraising events sponsored by the committee to raise funds for children's charities in our community.

Theatre Lawrence was one of three local non-profits selected as beneficiaries this year. The other two are 100 Good Women and Ecumenical Campus Ministry.

Theatre Lawrence expresses our deepest thanks to everyone involved in the St Patrick's Day organization for supporting us this year and everything they do for the community.

The Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade began in 1988 and is more than a one-day event. The committee runs more than 10 events throughout the year to raise money to support Douglas County area organizations that support children. Since 1998 the organization has donated more than $1.2 million.

A little "theatre magic"

One phrase that gets thrown around when working with young people on theatrical projects is “theatre magic!” When we enter production week and it looks like we are miles away from where we want to be, I have been known to say, “Let’s just hope ‘theatre magic’ kicks in!” Or when parents ask, “how do you get all those kids to do what they are supposed to do on stage with just five days of rehearsal?” I half jokingly respond “theatre magic.”

When I say “theatre magic” am I really thinking the theatre gods will look down on us at that moment and shower us with magic dust to pull all the various pieces together? No, I do not. So what do I mean when I say “theatre magic?”

I define “theatre magic” as

three parts the overwhelming human need to be a part of something bigger than oneself,
two parts the human need to be involved with something creative,
one part desire to do a good job, and/or show off
A pinch panic that the clock is ticking!

Throughout my 20 plus years of working with youth in theatre, “theatre magic” has never let me down, but sometimes it does try my patience by waiting until the last minute to show up! I think giving youth the opportunity to be involved in a theatrical production is magical, and something every child should have the chance to be a part of during childhood!

Kansas Theatre Festival results

Theatre Lawrence hosted the Kansas Community Theatre Festival on March 22. It was the first time Kansas has held a state community theatre festival in a number of years. Three theatres brought productions. This was the state-level festival as part of the American Association of Community Theatre festival cycle.

Congratulations to Theatre Salina and their production of THE REVOLUNTIONISTS for being selected to advance to the regional festival April 4-5 in Newton, Iowa. Learn more about AACT and the national festival, this June in Des Moines, Iowa here .

"Chicken and Biscuits" a good laugh for anyone with a family

Some things are universal, such as death and taxes. This wonderfully heartfelt comedy by Douglas Lyons isn’t about taxes. Instead it’s a show that invites you to laugh, cry, and celebrate family in all its beautiful, messy, complicated glory.

Describing the show in an interview just prior to its Broadway opening, Lyons said, “I would say Chicken and Biscuits would be a good laugh for anyone who has family.”

Lyons began work on the script (his first) while appearing on Broadway in the musical Beautiful, writing a little bit at a time during a 45-minute window between scenes. The show draws on his own experiences but also what he saw as a need. “Growing up with so many Black women ... they’re all strong and vibrant and have real personalities, and I rarely see those depictions in the American theater,” he explained in a recent LA Times interview. “The actor in me is like, why not write some different offerings for my peers so they can have more work?”

Debuting on Broadway in 2021, Chicken and Biscuits would go on to become the second most produced play in the 2022-23 season around the country. It would also be the jumping off point for two other plays that Lyons describes as “The Deep Breath Trilogy: New Plays for Black Women.” Table 17 debuted off-Broadway last year and Don’t Touch My Hair completed its premier last month in LA.

The theme of the trilogy isn’t recurring characters. Instead, Lyons says each play has a moment where a Black woman stands center stage and takes a deep breath. “In the world we live in right now, that’s revolutionary,” he said.

At a time when being inclusive and intentional in celebrating all aspects of our community is becoming bafflingly taboo a show like this reminds us of our shared experiences. As Lyon’s said, “…I think the beauty of the play is that I found it’s not just the food itself, it’s the imagery of us eating the food, it’s the tradition, the laughter, the healing, and the joy that takes place over the food that the play is addressing.”

How do you stay positive and find inspiration during difficult times? That’s definitely something on a lot of minds right now. While it might seem cliché I know I’ve seen the positive impact of the arts radiating from activities at TL.

“Native Gardens” used humor to spark timely conversations about belonging and perceptions of our neighbors. “Sunday in the Park with George” brought tears to many patron’s eyes as we reflected on the sacrifices we make for our passions and our lasting legacies. We saw joy and excitement on the faces of kids in the audience at our free Suitcase Stories performance and from the stage during the middle school musical “Tut Tut”.

That impact is continuing, as our upcoming “Chicken and Biscuits” hilariously explores family and our common bonds. Nothing highlights inspiration like the Penguin Project which has started work for this summer’s show. We’re connecting with the broader community as we are a beneficiary of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade festivities (support of those upcoming events helps our education programs).

Make no mistake, the challenges are many, and continue to compound. One thing that has always provided inspiration, creative shelter, and community connection is the arts. Let’s work together to keep making sure that stays true.

"Native Gardens" brings timely laughs and questions

Welcome to our first show of 2025! At first glance, Native Gardens is a lighthearted comedy about neighbors feuding over a fence and a flowerbed. Beneath the humor, however, there are timely and complex issues to be explored.

Debuting in 2016, Karen Zacarías’ play has become one of the most produced shows in the country. The idea for the play took root (pun intended) during a dinner party Zacarias attended and the conversation turned to petty disputes her friends were having with their neighbors.

“We were laughing about how absurd these fights are,” Zacarias said. “But there was also something so primal about it. Like every conflict in the world, every war is a fight between neighbors. I thought, ‘What would happen if I just made it about plants in the backyard?’”

As you will see, the play’s conflict sprouts from not just the dispute over a property line, but the perception of who we see as different than ourselves. That difference could be anything from age, to race, to economic background. How do we coexist with our neighbors – be it next door, across town, or across the country – when our disagreements can spiral into absurdity? There has been no shortage of this over the past several years. Do those conflicts reveal something deeper about our communities?

It’s one of the hidden super powers of comedy to open the door for us to consider these questions. The act of sharing a laugh creates an immediate connection, a common ground, to start a conversation, or consider alternative points of view and realize that we can be right and wrong at the same time. Sneaky thing – a well crafted laugh.

“Over the years, I’ve had people write to me and tell me that they chose not to escalate a problem with a neighbor after seeing the play. That’s the best reward I’ve had from it,” Zacarias says. “While watching the play you may judge one couple and then judge the other, but in the end, I hope the person you are judging is yourself. How can we all be better neighbors?”

Not bad for a comedy about squabbling neighbors.

How about that snow? As we dig out from this mega-dose of winter, let’s shift our focus to the joys of spring and summer. Think about working your snow-free garden, tending to beautiful plants and flowers, while keeping an eye on what’s happening in your neighbor’s backyard.

With those delightful warm thoughts in mind, our first regular season production of 2025, “Native Gardens” opening next week, will plant the seed of laughs, warmth, and sprout some thoughts too. This relatively new play is filled with fun and comedy as a misplaced fence line leads to an all-out feud between neighboring couples. This timely and topical comedy is a great way to dig out of the winter doldrums.

While it’s cold outside, it’s a hot time at TL. In addition to “Native Gardens” we have two other shows in rehearsal, youth productions and classes, and a new adult dance class every Saturday morning. TL is definitely defrosting your winter blues.

It's the busiest time of the year

So much to do, and so much to be thankful for

We’re about to enter what is probably the busiest time of year. That mad dash between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. Filled with pumpkin spice everything, endless rolls of wrapping paper, and bottles of bubbly (followed by resolutions to never have bottles of bubbly again).

It is also a busy time at Theatre Lawrence. Our massive holiday musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is about to open for a three-week run. We’re currently casting our first regular season show of 2025, “Native Gardens.” We’re also about to audition our concert staging of “Sunday in the Park with George.” That’s on top of our youth and education programs, and regular day-to-day operations.

We are truly thankful and appreciative of our entire community. Without your support in the audience, as volunteers, and financially, Theatre Lawrence would be a shadow of what we are today. So, we give thanks to you, and hope you are able to take a breath (catch a show) and enjoy this the most busiest wonderful time of the year.

TL suitcase stories visits area schools

New program brings student stories to life

Theatre Lawrence has been packing our suitcase and heading out. No, we’re not running away to join the circus. We have been visiting area schools with our new outreach program, Suitcase Stories.

What is Suitcase Stories?

It all started with a simple suitcase. Theatre Lawrence’s Educator Director Emily Giles and local playwright Debra A. Cole filled the suitcases with interesting items to inspire young writers. During three class periods, the students created characters, locations, and plots for the perfect stories, and then…they wrote. Next, Emily and Deb read the stories and picked a few to adapt into original shorts plays. Add a talented group of local actors, and Suitcase Stories comes to life. Young students can see what their creative writing efforts can produce.

The Theatre Lawrence Suitcase Stories Project spurs students’ imagination, sparks creativity, and empowers students with tools for artistic self-expression and communication.

While all of the children’s stories cannot be performed, all can be compiled into a booklet for the young authors to treasure. We are quite proud of the work of our young students! We also want to extend a hug thank you to our actors who are bringing these stories to life!

It is due to generous donations to the DCCF "Giving for Good" campaign that we are able to offer this program to five classrooms this fall free of charge. Collaboration and community on display

Creating theatre is all about collaboration, and that has been especially evident at TL over the past few weeks.

First, the cast of “ Young Frankenstein” demonstrated incredible teamwork. When illness kept some actors and crew from performing, everyone pulled together to cover roles and keep backstage operations running smoothly. Bravo to everyone involved for showing that the show truly must go on!

Next, we partnered with the enthusiastic artists from the newly formed Bicycle Face Productions. Their presentation of new 10-minute works by local playwrights—graduates of TL’s playwrighting workshop over the past year—was a fantastic showcase of the creative energy alive in our community.

Finally, we want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to our recent fundraising concert featuring Yesterday and Today: The Beatles Interactive Experience . With a new format and date, this event was a departure from our traditional fundraiser (Dueling), but thanks to everyone in the audience and behind the scenes, we raised funds to support the theatre, particularly The Penguin Project.

All of this success is a result of extraordinary collaboration—on stage, behind the scenes, and in the audience. Together, we continue to prove just how much the community is at the heart of everything we do.

Funding will help support theatre youth programs

Theatre Lawrence is honored to have been named a 2025 beneficiary by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.

Funding will be used to support youth education programming at the theatre, including continuing our new suitcase story program, youth productions, providing scholarship opportunities, and the Penguin Project.

There will be a variety of events leading up the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Lawrence on Monday, March 17.

Theatre Lawrence was one of three local non-profits selected as beneficiaries this year. The other two are 100 Good Women and Ecumenical Campus Ministry.

New site coincides with several other online enhancements

Welcome to our new website!

This redesign has been in the works for over a year and we are excited to raise the curtain on our new site. In addition to a more modern and dynamic layout, you’ll find more features, in depth information about shows, and see a lot more of your friends and neighbors highlighted throughout the site.

“One of the first things on my goals list for Theatre Lawrence when I started was to enhance our web presence,” Jamie Ulmer, TL executive director, said. “This is such a dynamic organization and we needed a website that reflected the quality of work happening on stage.”

The redesign coincides with several other online changes for TL. We have switched to a new ticketing system. The new system is easier to navigate, and should provide a faster and more robust experience when you purchase tickets online.

Along with tickets, the new software will handle volunteer management. You just need to fill out an online volunteer application, then once approved you’ll be able to sign up for opportunities like ushering, tending bar, or other behind the scenes roles. We are still in the transition process with volunteer management, so please excuse any little unexpected bumps in the road.

Finally, the new box office system integrates donor management and email marketing – bringing together what had been four different systems that didn’t communicate with each other under one platform.

We are very excited to debut this and many other exciting enhancements to our community.
