Creative Scene Lab: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Over six weeks, we'll take A Midsummer Night's Dream apart and build something new from it using the tools of devised theater — movement, image, voice, ensemble composition, and collaborative play.

Devised theater means original material generated by the group rather than staged from a finished script. In this class, we'll be using scenes from A Midsummer Night's Dream as raw material — ours to reimagine, restage, and experiment around.

Each session includes a physical warm-up, a new devising tool or piece of acting craft, and plenty of time on our feet to play and make things. In our final session we'll have a low-stakes showcase to share what we've built, with room to be as visible or as behind-the-scenes as you want to be. No experience necessary. Memorization isn't required. If you've ever been curious about trying theater, you're welcome here.

Come if you're:

  • Drawn to Shakespeare, devising, or experimental work. We'll be doing genuine devising, not a straight read of the play. Bring your wacky ideas and appetite for experimentation.
  • An experienced actor who wants a new challenge. If you've done plenty of shows and want to work in a style you don't usually get to — physical, experimental, Shakespearean — this is your chance, in six Saturdays instead of a two-month rehearsal calendar.
  • Wanting to build your acting skills. Physical technique, interpretation of classic text, character work, creating original material, connecting with scene partners, and learning to get out of your head and into your body onstage.
  • New to theater entirely. No auditions and no experience of any kind required. This is meant to be a fun and supportive space for all experience levels.
