Staged Reading

Join local artists for a staged reading of Fire Messiah: A Community Musical of Miracles, a bold new musical by Ric Averill and Company being developed here in Lawrence.

Set in a near-future America shaped by catastrophic wildfires, the story follows a firefighter who becomes an unexpected symbol of hope after a miraculous rescue goes viral. Blending contemporary musical theater with dark humor and moments of tenderness, Fire Messiah explores faith, climate crisis, and the search for modern-day miracles — and what it means for communities to come together across their differences in order to survive.

Audience members will be invited to share feedback with the creative team following the performance.
