About the show:

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Score, Next to Normal is a powerful rock musical that shatters the illusion of the perfect American family. Beneath their suburban routine lies a raw and emotional journey through mental illness, love, and resilience. With a gripping pop/rock score, it’s a deeply moving and unforgettable theatrical experience.


What to prepare of auditions:  Those auditioning will be asked to sing no more than 1 minute of a song of their choice (an accompanist will be provided), and read from the script. This show does not require a dance audition. The ages in the character descriptions are how they are described by the script and represent a general age range (in regards to casting) rather than a firm age limit on the actors playing the roles.


Important dates:

  • Call backs - Wednesday, July 30. We will email anyone we would like to callback via Casting Manager. Call backs will not be publicly posted
  • Cast list will be posted by Friday, Aug. 1
  • Read thru - Aug. 4
  • Rehearsals will be held Sunday-Thursday in the evenings (7 - 10 p.m.)
  • First tech - Sept 14 (beginning at 1 p.m.)

Character Descriptions

The ages in the character descriptions are how they are described by the script and represent a general age range (in regards to casting) rather than a firm age limit on the actors playing the roles. Genders of the characters are specified by the authors and will be cast with actors who present as those genders (with the possible exception of Dr. Madden).


Diana

Delusional, bipolar, and depressed. The sexiness of her yesterdays has only recently begun to soften. She is determined to make her family perfect but is tortured by a death in the family.

Gabe

Diana & Dan's son. Dashing, athletic, and bright. He is a playful man and everything a mother could imagine.

Dan

Diana's husband. He is handsome and genuine. Though a constant in Diana's tumultuous life, he has grown tired and weary of her antics.

Natalie

Diana & Dan's troubled daughter. An accomplished pianist and hardworking student, her struggles are exacerbated by her mother's behavior. She greatly admires Henry.

Henry

Natalie's classmate. The all-around musician, philosopher, and slacker. He has an intoxicating capacity for sympathy and romance.
