About These Auditions

Important, please read!

Singing Audition:

Adults and Students in grades 9-12: Please prepare 16–24 bars of a song from The Wizard of Oz (preferred) or a song in a similar classic musical theatre style. Good alternatives might include songs from Annie, The Music Man, Mary Poppins, Meet Me in St. Louis, Cinderella, or The Sound of Music. Choose something that shows us your voice and your ability to tell a story through song. An accompanist will be provided.

Students in grades 3–8: Please prepare  one of the two provided audition selections: “Over the Rainbow” or “Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead.” Audition music will be provided.

Dance Audition:

Please review the dance videos for your age group and be prepared to do them at the audition. If you are auditioning for Wicked Witch, Glinda, or the Wizard ONLY, you do not need to attend the dance audition. CLICK HERE FOR THE CHOREOGRAPHY VIDEOS.

Readings:

If you are ONLY auditioning for the Wicked Witch/Elmira Gulch OR Wizard/Professor, you do not need to sing. We will provide a side for you to read. Other than for those two situations, we will not do scene readings at auditions. If we have callbacks, we may do scene readings then.

Performance Dates – December 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20 

Thursday-Saturday performances start at 7:30, with a 6:30 call time.

Sundays are matinees, which start at 2:30 (1:30 call).

With high ticket sales expected, it is possible that we will add Saturday matinees (2:30) as well.

If there are callbacks, they will be announced through Casting Manager. We hope to limit callbacks, so if you aren’t called back, it does not mean that you are not in the show.

The cast list will be posted by Friday, October 2nd.

The first Rehearsal/Cast Meeting is Sunday, October 4th from 5:00-8:00 (this time is an exception, as Sunday rehearsals will begin at 2:30 for the rest of the run).

General Rehearsal Schedule

Sundays: 2:30-5:30

Monday-Thursday: 6:30-9:30*

*The youth ensemble will be done by 8:00 until November 17; thereafter 9:30.

We will provide a complete rehearsal schedule at the first meeting.

Thanksgiving Week: No rehearsals Wednesday-Saturday.

Tech Sunday: November 29th from 1:00-9:00. Dinner will be provided.

Character Descriptions

Dorothy Gale - Earnest. Innocent. Brave. Determined. Singer, dancer, mover. 16+ (mezzo/lyric soprano, G3-C5, optional E5)

Scarecrow/Hunk - Clumsy and flexible. Kind. Very physical. A singer and loose-limbed mover. (high baritone/tenor, B♭2–F♯4, optional A♭4)

Tinman/Hickory - Stiff. Very warm and caring. Singer and mover. (baritone/tenor, B♭2–G4)

Cowardly Lion/Zeke - Dramatic and silly. Nervous and confident. Strong voice and cat-like movement. (high baritone, B♭2–F4)

Wicked Witch of the West/Miss Almira Gulch - A non-singing role. Scary. Needs an unforgettable cackle. (Non-singing)

The Wizard of Oz/Professor Marvel - A non-singing role. A showman. A conman? (Non-singing)

Glinda the Good Witch/Aunt Em - Loving, kind as Glinda. No-nonsense as Aunt Em. A singer. Refined, with graceful movement. (soprano/mezzo, C3-C5)

Emerald City Guard/Uncle Henry - Goofy in Oz and practical in Kansas. Singer and mover. (baritone, B♭2–E♭4)

Toto will be a puppet. (Non-singing) We will be casting an actor to operate the puppet.

The Youth Ensemble (3rd - 8th Grade) will play the Munchkins, Poppies, and Flying Monkeys.

The Adult Ensemble (9th Grade to age 109) will play The Crows, Trees, Winkie Guards, and Ozians 

The Jitterbugs will be played by the 8-10 strongest dancers of the Youth/Adult Ensembles.
