About the show:

A riotous romantic farce in the spirit of Noël Coward, The Cottage delivers mistaken identities, scandalous secrets, and nonstop hilarity. When lovers Sylvia and Beau escape to a cozy countryside cottage to start anew, unexpected guests—and outrageous revelations—turn their plans upside down. From the playwright of Clue On Stage, it’s a whirlwind of witty chaos and charming mischief with love (mostly) conquering all.


Rehearsals begin Monday, Jan. 26. Rehearsal times Sundays 2-5 p.m., Monday-Thursday 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Characters

All roles may be any ethnicity, and all are involved in moments of physical intimacy such as kissing.

Ages listed are relative, not entirely prescriptive.

RP accent will be spoken by all characters. This is encouraged for auditions but not required. An understanding of tempo is more important than a perfect dialect, which can be developed and refined during the rehearsal process.


SYLVIA: Woman, Mid 20s-40s. - Wife to Clarke and lover of Beau. A lovely and rash romantic. Strong-willed and passionate, Sylvia transforms throughout the show from a wistful, hopeful romantic to a self-realized woman with her own backbone. 


BEAU: Man, Mid 20s-Late 40s - Married to Marjorie, brother to Clarke, and having an affair with Sylvia (his sister-in-law). Perhaps the best looking man in Britain, with the charm of Cary Grant and hauteur of John Cleese. Logical to the point of pessimism, Beau is quite accustomed to having things go his own way yet emotionally detached enough to be (mostly) unbothered by changing circumstances. 


MARJORIE: Woman, Mid 20s-40s - Wife of Beau. Extremely pregnant (8 Months), pragmatic, loves a good gossip, and a tad spicy. Unflappable in every sense of the word. Unless of course, she's in labor.


CLARKE: Man, Mid 20s-Late 40s - Brother to Beau and married to Sylvia. Distinguished gent with a lover’s spirit who can be slightly petulant when feeling in competition with his brother. Always aiming to please, Clarke's kind-heartedness may lead others to take him for a fool.


DIERDRE: Woman, 20s-30s - A pretty and optimistic nincompoop who is capable of surprising moments of occasional wisdom and insight. Gullible is Diedre's middle name, but her romantic appeal and awfully sweet nature make up for that (in some people's estimation). *This role requires moments of fainting and handling/use of a prop gun.


RICHARD: Man, 30s-40s - Quite the mystery of a man, known to be a murderer before he even enters the house yet unexpectedly gentle. Born to be half of a soul-mated duo, Richard is hell-bent on finding and keeping his true love. *This role requires handling/use of a prop gun.
